Khmer Philosophy

Buddha's Teaching:

Believe nothing – no matter where you read it, no matter who said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own commonsense.

      - Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it.

      - Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumoured by many.

      - Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in books.

      - Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders.

      - Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations.

But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and it is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it!

* Nothing is as long as a longing heart. Nothing is as strong as surging flood. Nothing is as heavy as the weight of gratitude. Nothing is as hard as doing a job set by one’s own wife.

* Those who boast to be perfect, have so many flaws. Those who boast to know a lot, know so little.

* Those who are strong shouldn’t overlook those who are weak, for the grass tied up together can be used as a rope to tie up an elephant. A king relies on the support of his people like a boat relies on the water.

* The rich should care for the poor’s wellfare if they are to live with each other in peace and harmony because the poor are like the garment worn upon the rich person’s body.

* Big chickens or small chicken are alike, they all eat grains for food.

* Those who are dead but still alive are those who worked hard when they were alive and left their legacy to the people behind them.

* A man must beware of the woman with these five bad habits:

· gossiping or bad mouthing;

· showing off her beauty to attract men’s attention;

· spending time at the neighbours’ houses instead of doing work in her own home;

· doesn’t like cooking, making the husband do housework;

· eating before the husband.

This kind of woman, even if you already have ten children with, must be divorced.

* A woman must be careful with the man who has any of the following bad behaviours:

· a drunkard;

· a playboy who is not serious in holding any job;

· hanging with bad friends, behaving like a gangster;

· addicted to gambling;

· lazy, not having any skills.

This kind of man, if taken to be a husband, will bring no happiness to a woman.

* Losing a father is better than losing a mother. A baot sunk is better than a house burned down.

* Students are good because their teachers train them well. Children are good because their parents teach them well.

* The longest is measured by words. The shortest is measured by words.

* A house must be built to suit the preference or the needs of the people who live in it.

Picture: An old painting on the wall of Wat Kompong Tralarch Leu, Kompong Chnang

  •  When holding the fish in the hand, one often complains that it is too small. When the fish escapes, one often exaggerates that they lose such a big fish.
  • A man is like the soil. His wife is like the fertilizer. His friends and relatives are like the water.

  • The clouds add beauty to the sky. Blossoms add beauty to the tree. The waves add beauty to the sea. Knowledge and intelligence add beauty to a person.

  • A snake’s poison can be cured by an antidote. A bad person’s deed is hard to cure.

  • Don’t just be blown away by the wind. Don’t be fooled by mocking or flattery words.

  • Don’t cast the fishing line over a hill. Don’t do things without considering the elders or the powerful people.

  • Though spending all his life with a wiseman, an idiot will never become wiser; just like the ladle never knows the taste of food.

  • Rolling with a dog, it bounds to lick your mouth. Being too playful will reduce your respectability.

  • Wealth, power, and reputation tend to waver; just like the sun never stays still in the east.

  • A forest without animals, a country without wisemen, a place without religion, a home without young children, a world without the sun …, this kind of world will not survive for long.

  • Don't abadon the winding road.  Don't just go straight and take a short cut.  Use the road that has already been cleared and walked by the elders.

  • A person who lets learning opportunity pass by is like a monkey who obtains a diamond but doesn't know its value, so he tosses it around for fun.

Those who despise being ignorant are likely to become wise.  Those who despise being poor are likely to become rich.

Delicious or not depends on the degree of hunger.  Good or bad depends on the people's view points.

Knowing a man by hanging out with him.  Knowing a place by visiting it.  Knowing yourself by giving yourself education.

Upon hearing the thunders, don't just throw away the old water in the jar for the rain might not come.

Fighting among each other in a family is like showing your naked body to the neighbours.  Fighting with each other in a country, is like showing the treasure map to the burglars.

The ivy smothers the tree, the weed smothers the pond.

A single fragrant tree can perfume the whole forest.  A single person's good reputation can bring fame to the whole village or country.

Use the thorn to take out the thorn stuck in your feet.  Get your enemies to fight against each other for you.

Having friends is better than having heartless relatives.

You cannot please every person.

The code of conduct

A brief biography of Preah Reach Samphea

Prince Reach Samphea Po-nhea To was born around 1604.  In 1620 he was made crown prince and betrothed to his step-sister, Princess Bopha Vati.  He joined Buddhist monkhood at the age of 20 and he was expected to stay in monkhood and learn some dharma for 6 to 12 months only.  However, Preah Reach Samphea was so interested in learning Buddhist dharma and Khmer literature that he announced his decision to spend the rest of his life in monkhood.  Even when his father, King Jaya Jetha II, passed away in 1628, Preah Reach Samphea still refused to leave the temple to become king.

Between 1628 and 1629, Preah Reach Samphea's uncle, Prince Otaya Borom Raja, was assuming the role of the acting king while the court ministers kept visiting Preah Reach Samphea and trying to persuade him to take his rightful throne.  Also within that year, Prince Otaya was married to Princess Bopha Vati.

In 1629 Preah Reach Somphea left his monkhood and was crowned King of Cambodia.  A couple of years later Preah Reach Somphea was known to have an affair with Princess Bopha Vati, his ex-fiancée and the current wife of his uncle.  The two secretly sent love letters to each other.

In 1634, when Bopha Vati ran away from her husband to live with Preah Reach Samphea, a bitter war between the uncle and the nephew broke out.  Both sides sent their armies to fight against each other.  Preah Otaya happened to be in a better position of winning this war because he had more soldiers and better weapons, especially an army of the Portuguese soldiers with guns.  Preah Reach Samphea lost the war and became a fugitive.  Preah Otaya's soldiers found him on top of a sugar palm tree.  Preah Reach Samphea was shot dead by a Portuguese armed man.

Preah Reach Samphea was known to be a great poet, great philosopher, and a great teacher.  Hence, his crime of stealing his uncle's wife, which led him to his tragic death, puzzled many people.  Some people believed that he was trying to hide on top of the palm tree to escapte death.  However, some people believed that the reason he was sitting on top of that palm tree because he was inscribing the poem of his last words of teaching, which is known as Jbab Preah Reach Samphea, on palm leaves.  And right before the time of his death, he managed to inscribe a poem and asked the soldiers who were standing around on the ground to deliver it to his uncle.

Preah Reach Samphea's Last Words

(A poem inscribed and sent off the top of a palm tree)

Please listen to me, oh gentlemen

Don’t play with Kama, love or lust

It makes you blind and lose your sense of righteousness

And when you die, you'll find no peace nor happiness

As you'll be suffering in hell.

Because of a princess,

I was messing around like a fish rolling in the mud

Please listen to me, every man

If you want to avoid suffering in hell, live your life with decency

And don’t mess with your life like me.

I am going to die soon

I wish I could die with dignity

And I wish

That in the next life I would be reborn as a wise and decent person

That I would be able to help men and women lead decent lives.

Please kind soldiers,

Please take my letter to my uncle

So he could be informed of what I wanted to say

So he could be reminded not to play with Kama.

The following words of wisdom are taken from Jbab Preah Reach Samphea.

Forgiveness is the best gift one can give.

Friendship is the best treasure one should keep.

Good reputation is the best perfume one can wear.

A kind heart is better than the best qualification one can gain from education.

Good advice is often left untaken.

The truth is often seen as poisonous or not pleasant to see or hear.

The words of wisdom from elderly are often thought to be old-fashioned and out-of-date.

A kite gains height in the sky because of the wind.

A king gains height in his reign because of his people.

A husband gains prosperity because of a good wife.

The ignorant one often dislikes the wise one.

The poor often dislikes the rich.

A jealous woman often dislikes other women who are nice.

A villain often dislikes listening to good teaching or advice.

The usefulness of a gift depends on the need of the recipient.

Treachery tends to appear more attractive or lovely than honesty.

A person with unkempt behaviour gains contempt.

A lazy person gains disrespectability.

A conceited, loud-mouth person gains troubles.

Don’t get involved in any squabble.

Don’t listen to gossips or scandalous talks.

 Don’t walk into a dead-end path.

Don’t block the path of others.

Don’t try to grow rice in a place where the elephants often pass through.

If you know that those words are wrong, don’t listen to them.

If you think that those behaviours are not decent, don’t copy them.

If you don’t have any wise thing to say, don’t say anything.

If you want food, go look for it.

If you want an adventure, set out the journey for it.

If you want friendship, be friendly to others.

Don’t trust or rely on foreigners.

Don’t trust someone simply because he appears to be a hermit or a holy person.

Don’t believe in something because it is spoken eloquently.

Though you might listen to your wise elders, do pull yourself up and stretch your thinking.

Beware of the weed when growing rice.

Beware of her family when choosing a wife.

Beware of their behaviours before trusting the servants.

Having respectability is better than having only power.

Having power is better than having only wealth.

Losing the wealth is better than going against the authority.

Physical pain or illness is easier to endure than humiliation.

Death with dignity is better than living in shame.

Three types of people with whom you should not associate:

    1. beautiful but stupid or poorly behaved women

    2. poor self-disciplined monks

     3. aggressive or thoughtless men

Buddha's Teaching:

The thought manifests as the words, the words manifest as the deed, the deed develops into habit, and habit hardens into character. So watch the thought and its way with care, and let it spring from love and the concern for all beings.

A tongue makes a sharp knife, kills without drawing blood. Words have the power to both destroy and heal.

 Buddha's Teaching:

Pay no attention to the faults of others, things done or left undone by others. Consider only what oneself has done or left undone.

Since you cannot tame the mind of others until you have tamed your own, begin by taming your own mind.

First, rely on the spirit and meaning of the teachings, not on the words. Second, rely on the teachings not on the personality of the teacher. Third, rely on real wisdom, not on superficial interpretation. And fourth, rely on the essence of your pure wisdom mind, not on judgemental perceptions.

Do not look for faults in others, but look for faults in yourself and purge them like bad blood.

 Buddha's Teaching:

There’s no fire like greed, no crime like hatred, no sorrow like separation, no sickness like hunger of heart, and no joy like the joy of freedom.

Everything is based on mind, is led by mind, is fashioned by mind. If you speak and act with a polluted mind, suffering will follow you as the wheels of the oxcart follow the footsteps of the ox.

Holding on to anger or hatred is like grasping a hot coal with the intention of throwing it at someone else. You are the one who gets burned.

Everything is based on mind, is led by mind, is fashioned by mind. If you speak and act with a pure mind, happiness will follow you as a shadow clings to a form.

Buddha's Teaching:

Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle, and the light of the candle can never be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared.

Do not be jealous of the good qualities of others. But other than admiration, adopt them for yourself.

An insincere and evil friend is more to be feared than a wild beast. A wild beast may wound your body, but an evil friend will wound your mind.

There’s nothing more dreadful than the habit of doubt. Doubt separates people. It is a poison that disintegrates friendship and breaks up person’s relation. It is a thorn that irritates and hurts. It is a sword that kills.

Success is the result of effort. No animals will run into the mouth of a sleeping lion.

Effort should be used appropriately. If one tries to teach a stork to talk like a parrot, no matter how much effort one spends, there won’t be any success.

What is not meant to be, is not meant to be. One cannot ride an oxcart in the river nor row a boat on the road.

Being kind to an unkind person is a waste of effort. Saying words of wisdom or trying to teach wise things to a stupid person who doesn’t know how to think is a waste of time. Singing a beautiful song to a deaf person is a waste of energy.

A horse, a weapon, a skill, a musical instrument, a speech, a man or a woman – good or bad, useful or not useful, depends on the person who knows how to use them.

A diamond is placed on the shoe, a pebble is placed on the crown. Wherever they are placed, a diamond is still a diamond, and a pebble is still a pebble.

A pebble is placed on the crown, a diamond is placed on the shoe; it is no fault of the diamond, it is the fault of the person who doesn't know the different values of a diamond and a pebble.

Know a good friend in time of hardship, know a good soldier in time of war, know an honest person when they pay their debt, know a good spouse in time of poverty, know a good relative in time of misfortune.

It is easy to teach other to become a venerable person; but it is hard for one to teach oneself to become a venerable person on their own.

The cool beam of the moon is not desirable to a person who is cold. The burning heat of the sun is not desirable to a person who is hot.

When it is necessary, a person can be sacrificed to save the family; a family can be sacrificed to save the village; a village can be sacrificed to save the country; the country can be abandoned to save one’s life.

Be fearful and concerned when the disaster is far away. Be brave and proactive when the disaster is near. Whoever can do this is a great leader.

A pig-headed person will lose their respectability, a dishonest person will lose their friendship, a greedy person has no virtue, a mean person has no peace, a king who values flattery and enjoys the company of greedy people will lose his throne.
